Cheerleading - Approved Routine Requirement

At the NYSPHSAA Summer Meeting the following proposal was approved regarding competitive cheerleading routines:

A minimum of 15 seconds of cheer and three (3) eight (8) counts of dance will be required in all competitive cheerleading routines throughout the season.

This is effective for the 2016-2017 school year.

Cheerleading - Competition Music Regulation

This Spring USA Cheer distributed new regulations regarding their competitions and the music that teams are using during their competitions.  USA Cheer does not have jurisdiction over our cheerleading events as we follow NFHS rules.  Although the music copyright laws have not changed USA Cheer is now requiring proof of proper license to use the music during the cheerleading routine.

The NYSPHSAA is not following suite with the USA Cheer regulations and we have spoken with our legal counsel, Renee James, and she has created the attached document to help remind and guide our schools with the copyright laws.

Any questions, contact Todd Nelson at the NYSPHSAA office.

Cheerleading - Section 2 Looking for Judges

"New York State has finally recognized cheerleading as an official sport!

This exciting change has led to stricter rules surrounding the judging of cheerleading competitions across the state; judges must now be members of the New York State Cheerleading Judges Association (NYSCJA), an organization created in 2015 to standardize cheerleading judging across the state.

Section 2 is proud to announce our local chapter of the NYSCJA.  This chapter will participate in judging cheerleading competitions at the local, regional, and state level.   We are currently looking for judges who will join our association and become eligible to judge events in NYS.

For information on how to join or any other questions, please contact Dennis Friends at This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.."
